    roman shades

  • (Roman shade) A flat fabric shade that folds into neat horizontal pleats when raised.
  • (Roman Shade) A single sheet shade that rises up by lift cord in a tear drop or flat style that looks like an accordion folding up back and forth on itself. Reminds me of an opera house window treatment swag. Part of our Melhanna Shade collection.
  • (Roman Shade) This window treatment style consists of a fabric shade with wooden slats inserted horizontally at intervals down its entire length. It is raised and lowered via pull cord as with other blinds, but gathers soft folds as it does so.

Challenging room!

Furniture Arrangement
You need to group your seating around the TV and define a living room area. The love seat at the kitchen entrance at the end of the room blocks that door way and interrupts the foot traffic flow (represented by green line in pic on right). I don’t see the purpose of the love seat over there anyway.

Move the sofa down and then move the love seat over closer to the door and your sliding glass door. Put the recliner at the end of the sofa at an angle. This still enables TV viewing and groups all your seating together.

I see that the area normally used as a dining room is being used as an office/exercise area. That’s fine since this is the way you have been using it and is better utilized by you in this arrangement. Consider turning the exercise machine so it faces the little wall by the window. This keeps it a little hidden and not one of the first things you see when you enter your front door.

I don’t show it in the picture but consider angling your desk so that it is angled in the corner of that room. This will keep the area from looking so boxy. You can move your book shelf to the right of the angled desk and that will give you space to the left of the desk to add a low bookshelf for books/storage. Get baskets for the shelves to keep things looking neat and orderly. The bookshelf there would give you space to add some decor on the top shelf and a large framed picture with a bold print. You may want to choose something that has a lot of the orange color in it like on the wall in the LR.

You can add a small foyer table or console on the wall where your love seat was to add decor and have a little storage for more office stuff.

I love the orange you painted the dining room area. But I think you should change these walls to a taupe color with white trim. You said that you liked the orange because it complemented your furniture. Now that all your furniture is in one seating area, you should paint one wall in the living room orange. You don’t want to overwhelm this small space with too much orange on the walls.

If you paint the wall the TV is on the orange color it will help define a focus wall for the living room. The rest of the walls I would paint a taupe OR a light moss green or even a light apple green color. Be sure to take a paint stick with you to the paint store that has that orange color on it to assist you in choosing the right color and tone. Get a number of different samples and bring them home to tape up all over on different walls. Leave them there for 24 hours so you can observe the color samples in all different light. This will help you choose the right shade and tone to complement the orange.

Window Treatments and Pillows
The windows in the living room area is quite challenging! They are really tricky in dressing them without putting so much emphasis on them. They are spaced so close together and positioned oddly. I would put roman shades on all the windows.

Having panels on all the windows like you do just overwhelms the space. And because you have low ceilings putting the valances up emphasizes the low ceilings and covers part of your windows. You could get a light tan or even white for roman shades. You could also consider bamboo shades. JCPenney’s has both on sale for like $16.99 in their outlet store online.

Carry your orange color over to that side of the room by getting Euro Shams to cover the tan pillows you have on there. Doing this will highlight the orange across the room at the TV but not overwhelm the room with a lot of orange. It will flow nicely. Euro shams can be pricey. Consider visiting a fabric store and finding a decorator orange fabric on sale and then making your own covers for your pillows.
